The Formation Flying experience, is organised by Hutton Aviation and The Squadron. It takes place at North Weald Airfield in the Spring and Autumn of every year and these sessions offer pilots the opportunity to fly safely in close formation with other aircraft. Experience sessions are given on a one-to-one basis by current and ex RAF instructors.
These sessions are for 5 days (Monday to Friday) and fees (currently £120 per day) are charged to cover hotel accommodation and subsistence for the instructors. Accommodation can also be booked for students but these costs are not included in the fees.
Currently, the aircraft participating are Yak 52s and Extras. However, other types are acceptable but, obviously, they must be two-seat aircraft and there must be at least two or three of the type.
Students must provide the aeroplane and have at least 20 hours’ experience on type. Also, students should provide a parachute and headset for their instructors, if at all possible.
Standard Operating Procedures are forwarded to every ab initio student and these must be read and understood prior to arrival. The week commences at 1000 hours sharp on Monday with a compulsory ground school. Students can expect an average of 3-4 sorties per day, depending upon the weather, and each sortie is thoroughly briefed and debriefed within each formation group.
It is recommended, although not compulsory, that students should participate in all five days of the course in order to be proficient in basic formation by the end of the week. Students can then return for further instruction in later sessions if they wish to progress to tac formation and formation aerobatics, subject to the suitability of the aircraft.
Anthony Hutton is available to examine pilots for Formation Display Authorisations to those who have reached the necessary standard of proficiency.
